PEP-PAC Challenge - A Message from Todd Fijewski, MD, FACEP
My Fellow Emergency Physicians:
I am Todd Fijewski, an emergency physician in Pittsburgh and this year’s Pennsylvania Emergency Physicians Political Action Committee (PEP-PAC) chair. I am truly pumped to kick off PEP-PAC week 2019.
This is our opportunity to explain the role of PEP-PAC within PACEP and how it affects you. You are an integral part of the PAC’s success. Our PAC pools monetary donations from our over 1900 members and uses that money to build relationships in Harrisburg with legislators by making political donations and attending fundraisers. It’s how we are able to thank them for supporting us.
These relationships are crucial when discussing issues such as balance billing, reimbursement, opioid legislation, scope of practice, medical liability reform, patient access to emergency care, and change of venue to name a few. We fight for you and your patients against trial lawyers, insurance companies, hospital administration, and sometimes, when necessary, even other specialties.
We have been working to solve balance billing/surprise medical bills in this state for 6 years. We have defeated many bills that would have been devastating for us. Legislation that favors the insurers can possibly reduce our salary by 20-30% and thus reduce patient access to care. It is imperative that we are at the table to negotiate for fair payment models in regards to out of network billing.
Just over 50 years ago, the specialty of emergency medicine was founded out of necessity. We are fortunate to stand on the shoulders of giants who have invested so much to build our profession. Not only is it our obligation to continue to advance emergency medicine, but we must also continue to protect it from a constant onslaught of unfair and ill-conceived policy proposals.
Stand with emergency physicians across Pennsylvania. Invest in yourself and each other. Defend this house. Defend your patients.
