The American Academy of Pediatrics recently published two Policy Statements and a Technical Report making recommendations to improve emergency care of our youngest patients.
“Access to Critical Health Information for Children During Emergencies: Emergency Information Forms and Beyond” describes the importance of the EIF, or Emergency Information Form, and its elements, and makes recommendations for increasing availability of EIFs in the prehospital, ED, and hospital settings. “Crowding in the Emergency Department: Challenges and Recommendations for the Care of Children” and its accompanying Technical Report address the effects ED overcrowding has on our youngest patients. Strategies for multiple stakeholders, including pediatric providers (in the primary care and ED settings), healthcare system leaders, healthcare finance planners, and policymakers, are provided.
